Introduction to the mathematics of porous media

Overview

In this lecture, Professor Jan Martin Nordbotten will review mathematical models of porous media. This lecture assumes a familiarity with mathematical models for porous media, and is intended as a refresher to prepare participants for the advanced topics covered in subsequent lectures. As such, we will discuss topics such as:

  • Governing equations of single-phase flow, including conservation of mass and Darcy’s law.
  • Extensions to tracer transport.
  • Extensions to poromechanics.
  • Standard numerical methods for porous media.
